User Training

The training that is supplied with Inspector is modular of structure to tailor to the demands and knowledge of the trainees.  The training is segmented by the components of Inspector in the following way:

  • Inspector SCA with Power Tracer ( 3 days )
  • EM Probe Station ( 1 day )
  • EM Probe Station & RF Tracer ( 1 day )
  • Inspector FI with VC Glitcher ( 1 - 2 days )
  • Diode Laser Station (with icWaves) ( 2 days )

Knowledge on side channel analysis and Java is useful, but not required. All training components use training cards that are supplied with Inspector. When the trainees return back home after the training, they can practice their new skills on these cards along with extensive tutorials.

Inspector SCA with Power Tracer

This is a three-day course for new Inspector users. This course covers subjects like; DPA analysis, DPA on DES, signal processing, module development and countermeasures. The objective of the training is to provide Inspector users with the necessary experience to perform power analysis using Inspector. Although the training refreshes the necessary theoretical knowledge of side channel analysis, it focuses on hands-on experience with the Inspector tool. A significant number of practical exercises are included in the training. Each trainee will experience retrieving a secret key from a smart card.

EM Probe Station

This one day course covers the more advanced topic of performing EM analysis with Inspector and the EM Probe Station. A prerequisite of this course is that the trainee has some experience with Inspector by having attended the “Inspector SCA” course. The course covers the difference of EM analysis compared to power analysis, signal processing specific to EM and DEMA on a real card implementation. The objective of this training is to provide Inspector users with the necessary experience to perform EM analysis using Inspector.

EM Probe Station & RF Tracer

This course is also one day, covering the EM material mentioned in the previous paragraph plus added material about the RF Tracer.  Next to learning to perform EM analysis the trainees will also learn to perform EM analysis on contactless cards with the specific signal processing that is needed.

Inspector FI with VC Glitcher

Hands-on experience in glitching real card implementations is given in this course. Inspector and the VC Glitcher are used to glitch power and clock signals. Topics include glitching a PIN verification, Differential Fault Analysis and multi-glitching. This training is given to people without previous experience with Inspector, who only want to learn Fault Injection and to experienced Inspector SCA users extending their toolset. In the first case the course is two days, in the latter it is one day.

Diode Laser Station (with icWaves)

The Diode Laser Station course involves two days of training.  This provides the trainees experience with optical fault injection. With Inspector, the VC Glitcher and the Diode Laser station the trainees will inject faults on real DES implementations and PIN verifications. The icWaves is used during these exercises and teaches the trainees how to use this device for improved triggering.  Experience with Inspector FI, the course in the previous paragraph, is a prerequisite for following this course.
