Release History

Inspector is a product that incorporates more than a decade of side channel testing experience, starting back in 1998 when side channel testing was discovered. In 2003 and 2004, we build a brand new platform from scratch which resulted in the launch of a professional test product in 2005. Here you find an overview of the product releases since the introduction of the Inspector product early in 2005.

February 2010

The release of Inspector 4.1 supports the Diode Laser Station, implements a communication interface with SASEBO FPGA boards and introduces several new side channel cryptanalytic methods. In addition, GPU support is added to allow calculations to be executed on the GPU.

January 2010

Riscure presents the new Diode Laser Station. With the Diode Laser Station advanced laser fault attacks can be carried out that meet the highest international standards to assess if a smart card is secured against laser attacks. Read more about the Diode Laser Station.

August 2009

icWaves is launched as Inspector's advanced trigger device. icWaves generates a trigger pulse based on a waveform that is measured. icWaves can be used with Inspector SCA and FI. Read more on icWaves' capabilities.

July 2009

Inspector 4.0 introduces fault injection functionality on top of the existing side channel analysis functionality. Whilst it can operate as one integrated solution, 4.0 is available in two software versions, Inspector SCA and Inspector FI.

VC Glitcher is launched with Inspector FI. The VC Glitcher is a flexible and very fast glitching device to control clock, voltage and laser fault attacks.

March 2009

Inspector 3.0.1, which fixes several issues present in 3.0:

  • Contains improvements in memory allocation and usage
  • Fixes a bug in the Dynamic Alignment module
  • Improves representation on screen of histo plots and trace selection
  • Solves a COM port allocation problem when several components are connected
  • Prevents the PC to hibernate or go to standby to ensure program execution is never interrupted

See the complete list of improvements and bug fixes.

September 2008

Inspector 3.0, featuring a fully automated XYZ table for the EM Probe Station, a 3D representation of the electromagnetic emanations of a chip, new 2nd order additions to 3DES and AES cryptanalysis and a new menu structure. Read more on the new features in 3.0.

March 2008

Inspector 2.4.1, featuring the RF Controller, the first dedicated device on the market to support the measurement of side channel leakage from contactless cards. Further, it includes a new advanced DES cryptanalysis module.

January 2008

Inspector version 2.4.0, with an improved look-and-feel, new cryptanalysis modules for various RSA implementations and new simulated and and recorded test data. One of the new cryptanalysis modules for RSA CRT implementations contains a novel method. Further, the new version of the Power Tracer has an improved measurement circuit. By using the best ultra low-noise and high bandwidth analogue components that are electrically isolated from digital circuitry, the device provides output with an excellent signal-to-noise ratio. Further, it now contains a software-controlled smart card supply voltage, power signal gain and offset.

August 2007

Inspector version 2.3.1, featuring the EMA Tracer (its upgraded version is now known as the EM Probe Station) to analyse electromagnetic fields emitted by smart cards and embedded devices.

January 2007

Inspector version 2.1.4, featuring new FFT based filter functions
and comprehensive documentation of all functions. Inspector now also includes a test card to practice side channel analysis.

March 2006

Release of Inspector version 1.8.5, featuring basic crypto DPA attacks on AES and RSA. Inspector is now enhanced with acquisition capabilities and controls  he Power Tracer from software.

August 2005

Release of Inspector version 1.4.1, introducing spectral analysis using fast
fourier transformations.

April 2005

Release of Inspector version 1.2.9, featuring an open module interface where
users can add their own analysis code. This version includes basic statistical functions, an alignment function and a DPA function for DES.

February 2005

Release of version 1.0.2. Inspector is the first commercial side channel analysis tool on the market with a graphical user interface.
